Know Your Skin Type

Healthy skin is something we all desire for. However, to maintain optimal skin health, it is necessary for us to understand all skin types. Simply put, each of our skin needs daily cleansing and moisturization, no matter whether it’s dry, oily, sensitive, normal or any other skin types. But each type has their own demands. So, the first thing to do in starting a skincare routine becomes figuring out your skin type. But how is it possible?

Well, this blog will answer all your queries. So, keep reading this page till the end!

How Many Skin Types Are There?

Let’s get into the basics first!

So, there are generally five main skin types:

  • Normal
  • Dry
  • Oil
  • Combination
  • Sensitive

Now, to explain further, Normal skin type is quite well balanced. This means it’s not too oily or dry. Contrarily, dry skin always lacks moisture. In case you have dry skin, you may feel your skin flaky and tight always. Similarly, oily skin produces excess oil. This leads to shiny skin but with potential breakouts.

Combination skin has both oily and dry areas on their skin. Understand it as, the T-zone that includes forehead, nose and chin remains oily and the rest always dry. Lastly, sensitive skin gets easily irritated by certain products or environment related factors.

Overall, these different skin types are widely recognized by the American Academy of Dermatology.

Now, let’s move ahead with how to find out your skin type.

How To Find Your Skin Type?

There are two primary methods that you can use to find your skin type. After all, only this way, you can opt for the right products to maintain health for your skin.

  • Blotting Sheet Method
  • Watch And Wait Method

Understanding blotting sheet method-

Step 1- Begin by cleaning your face. Once done, pat it dry.

Step 2- Wait until your skin returns to its natural state.

Step 3- Take a blotting sheet. Gently press it on different areas of your face.

Step 4- Keep an eye on the amount of oil that is absorbed.

How to observe results-

  • If the blotting sheet picks up minimal oil, you likely have dry skin.
  • If there’s oil from the forehead and nose areas, you probably have combination skin.
  • If the blotting sheet shows oil from all areas of the face, you likely have oily skin.

Understanding the watch and wait method-

Step 1- Clean your face properly.

Step 2- Do not apply any skin care products on your face for some time.

Step 3- Observe how your skin feels and looks.

Step 4- Keep an eye on factors like shine, tightness, or discomfort.

How to observe results-

  • Dry skin feels tight and may have flakiness.
  • Oily skin appears shiny and may be prone to acne.
  • Combination skin has areas of both dryness and oiliness.
  • Normal skin feels balanced and doesn’t show extreme oiliness or dryness.

Skin Care Tips For Every Skin Types

A lot of us aren’t aware of the right ways to deal with different skin types. Here’s how you can take care of your skin easily.

1. Normal Skin

When you have normal skin, there are less chances of skin problems. Yet, that doesn’t mean you should skip out on a routine. Thus, consider cleaning your face twice daily. You can use a gentle cleanser that can help remove dirt from your face and oil build up. Once done, apply moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Additionally, on sunny days, do not skin using sunscreen during the day.

2. Dry Skin

Dry skin demands extra hydration and moisture. That is why opt for a creamy or hydrating cleanser. This will help avoid further drying out your skin. After cleansing, apply a rich moisturizer containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin to lock in moisture. Apart from these, consider exfoliating your skin twice a week. This will help remove dead skin cells and so a smoother complexion.

3. Oily Skin

If you have an oily skin, one thing you must consider doing is- managing excess oil production. That is why choose a foaming or gel-based cleanser. Such cleansers help remove dirt from your face and excess oil too. Then, choose oil-free moisturizers and products labeled as non-comedogenic. This helps in preventing clogged pores. You can also consider using a clay mask into your routine once a week. This will assist your face in staying less oily.

4. Combination Skin

This skin type comes in front as a tricky task. It is because dealing with both areas together is challenging. Therefore, always start with a gentle cleanser to cleanse your entire face. Then, use lightweight, oil-free moisturizers on oily parts of your face. Simultaneously, choose hydrating moisturizer for dry areas. Lastly, sunscreen is a must for combination skin type.

5. Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin always looks for extra care. Only this helps in avoiding irritation and flare-ups. So, if you have sensitive skin, choose fragrance-free and hypoallergenic products to minimize the risk of irritation. Choose a mild, non-irritating cleanser. Then, a soothing moisturizer containing ingredients like aloe vera or oat extract can help. However, always patch test new products before applying them.
